Intellectuals, not professionals: sociology in France
Article Abstract:
Sociology in France is an independent and well-established discipline with an organizational framework that has distinctive features. French sociologists are dependent on four sectors of the society. Some of them are members of a research center who indulge mainly in research. Other sociologists are in the academics and lectureship and some are in the teaching profession, while others work for private corporations and large firms. Although sociologists in France are distributed to different sectors, they indulge themselves in various debates whose main purpose is to influence public opinion and political life. These sociologists regard themselves not as 'professionals' but as 'intellectuals.'

Russian sociology in transition
Article Abstract:
Academic sociology in Russia is perceived more as an intellectual hobby than as a professional career, although Russian sociologists are increasingly focusing away from the political state and towards academic problems. An objective view of the history of sociology in Russia is presented in 'Sociology in Russia' edited by Vladimir A. Yadov. The book comprises a collaborative effort of major Russian sociologists and examines the national tradition in sociology, thematic programs in social sciences and structural changes in values.
