Son preference and the sex ratio at birth in China: A provincial level analysis
Article Abstract:
Sex ratios for Chinese provinces specific to parity and sex composition of previously-born children were calculated using data from the 1 Per Cent Sample of the 1990 Census of China. The variation in sex ratios at birth (SRB) amongst the provinces was found to relate to variations amongst the provinces in the degree of son preference. Abnormally high SRB's were observed in the majority of provinces.
