Preiss-Steele Place: housing older adults
Article Abstract:
The Preiss-Steele Place is a housing facility in Durham, NC, developed specifically for aged people with very low incomes. What sets this housing apart from others is that the Housing Authority of the City of Durham was able to integrate the housing and support services in a way that enables its physically and financially challenged residents to live comfortably. The design and facilities at the 102-bedroom housing complex facilitates independently living among its residents. The complex was funded by different public and private agencies, including the Federal National Mortgage Assn., Enterprise Social Investment Corp., the Community Investment Corp. of North Carolina and the North Carolina Housing Finance Agency.

Stadsherstel Amsterdam: Social housing saves the beautiful city
Article Abstract:
The Dutch city of Amsterdam was one of many cities in Europe that faced erasure after World War II, but was saved by a far-sighted municipal initiative that melded the goals of social housing with those of preservation. An account of the creation of Stadsherstel, a social housing corporation rooted in the tradition of Amsterdam's cooperative governance and dedicated to reclaiming ancient monuments as subsidized rental apartments, paying particular attention to landmarks that were old, modest, and extremely decayed, is presented.

Housing: Harriet Tubman's last work
Article Abstract:
An exploration of Harriet Tubman's accomplishments in the field of housing and supportive services is presented. Tubman referred her 'last work' as the purchase of two houses on 25 acres of land for $1, 450 at an auction for the aged.
