Shlepers and car washers: young Israelis in the New York labor market

Article Abstract:

Israeli immigrant males in New York, NY, are usually employed by moving companies and car washes. Significant differences such as ethnic and social background and type of military duty served divide these young men into two groups. The first group, which takes up moving company work, consists of upper-class Israelis who temporarily work in the US and who will eventually return to Israel to seek higher education. The second group consists of lower- or middle-class Israelis who hope to settle permanently in the US. Car wash work for them is a step toward managerial positions or the prospect of opening their own businesses.

Race and ethnic relations in immigrant New York

Article Abstract:

New York, NY, has become increasingly ethnically diverse. Since 1990, 111,000 foreign-born residents have been coming to New York annually. With the diverse population, ethnic conflicts become inevitable. Tensed relations between West Indians and African-Americans are evident. Although competition and tensions are apparent, encouraging signs of cooperation and accommodation at work, in school and in the neighborhood can also be observed.
