On the overlegalized conception of modern society
Article Abstract:
Robert C. Ellickson's 'Order without Law: How Neighbors Settle Disputes' focuses on the empirical, ideological and theoretical angles of the study of moral life and informal social control in modern society. It is the fruit of an investigation that discovered that the rural people in a California county handle disputes over cattle trespass by applying informal norms instead of legal rules. The book counters the belief that the government is the primary force behind social order. Other books are examined.
