Read My Desire: Lacan Against the Historicists

Article Abstract:

Controversy over the issues of postmodernism and poststructuralism are discussed by four books. The books are 'Read by Desire: Lacan Against the Historicists' by Joan Copjec, 'Spectres of Marx, the State of the Debt, the Work of Mourning, and the New International' by Jacques Derrida, 'Postmodernism and Social Inquiry' edited by David R. Dickens and Andrea Fontana and 'Rethinking Imagination: Culture and Creativity' edited by Gillian Robinson and John Rundell. Liberalism without reason?

Article Abstract:

Philosophical postmodernism and its proponents are criticized. Philosophical modernists' stance as supporters of the oppressed has become irrelevant since the working class has ceased from being oppressed and have bonded together to form powerful groups. These modernists choose to remain safe by being neutral rather than objective and rational. The very essence of philosophical postmodernism is the contention that there is no basis for validating and distinguishing Truth from Error.

Postmodernity

Article Abstract:

An overview of postmodernity is presented in the book entitled 'Postmodernity' by David Lyon. Postmodernity demands global participation in arguing over the state of contemporary society. There is a need to reassess modernity by requiring more effective socio-cultural collectiveness and by extolling the necessity of rendering moral decisions on modernity. Postmodernity is portrayed as a a cognitive, cultural and social compound.
