Soviet and post-Soviet environmental problems
Article Abstract:
Environmental policy in the last years of the Soviet Union was a process of perestroika. Concern about the environment helped create the civil consciousness which helped to erode the Communist state. However ecological demands were often inconsistent, and the ethnic grievances and political demands with which they were often linked made decision-making more complex. The successor states to the Soviet Union now face grave ecological difficulties which are aggravated by the economic crisis, which is itself a legacy of Communism.
