The mixed heritage of the chief: revisiting the problem of manhood in 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.'
Article Abstract:
Ken Kesey questions the search for manhood in men of mixed parentage in the novel 'One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.' Chief Bromden, one of the main characters in the book, believes that the only way to discover his roots and his manhood is through his Native American father. The conventional Oedipus story is reversed. The mother, a member of the repressive and dominant culture, has to be overcome to find the father. Kesey's novel is unsatisfactory in its examination of the way men of mixed heritage confront sexuality since it overlooks the problem in a patriarchal framework.

Male bodybuilding: The social construction of a masculine identity
Article Abstract:
Bodybuilding was originally regarded as deviant activity. However, the emergence of a new somatic culture that gave a high regard for physical fitness contributed to its increasing acceptance. Thus, people, particularly men, employed bodybuilding as a means to assert their self-identities. Bodybuilding, which originated from notions of muscular Christianity sports in the nineteenth century, became an important factor for the social construction of the masculine identity.
