The public interest, the greater good: how government should work
Article Abstract:
Housing and Urban Development Sec. Henry Cisneros believes that it is time to do something about the poverty conditions in the country. He encourages people not be cynical but to take part in the solution. According to Cisneros, there are four challenges that need to be faced to improve the condition for everyone. These are homelessness, reformation of public housing, need for affordable and less discriminatory housing, and rebuilding of cities. These require providing assistance to the poorest and the ill living on the streets, getting families out of traditional public housing and into self-sufficiency, helping people to purchase or rent their own homes in a non-discriminatory fashion, and reviving inner cities. Cisneros promises to participate in these efforts even after when he steps down from public office.

Interest in another's consideration of one's needs in communal and exchange relationships
Article Abstract:
Research was conducted to distinguish between communal and exchange relationships in terms of consideration for the needs of a partner. The patterns of findings in three studies undertaken indicate that consideration for a partner's needs is greater in a communal relationship rather than in an exchange relationship. In the first two studies, the need for a relationship, either communal or exchange, is controlled by one's availability. In the third study, the need for a relationship was dominated by preference for a particular person.

Half truths with real consequences: Journalism, research, and public policy. Three encounters
Article Abstract:
Three encounters with the mass media are described, representative of the author's experiences, and involving research on social policy issues, homelessness in the 1980s, family preservation programs aimed at reducing child abuse and major federal nutrition programs. It is concluded that the typical media item concerning sociological research has a steep decay curve, and that it is important to take into account what the media's precepts about what is newsworthy are.
