The role of fantasies and dreams in the TV viewing-aggression relationship

Article Abstract:

The effects of TV viewing on children's aggression were studied from the viewpoint of information processing theory. Aggression among Finnish children was measured using the peer nomination and self-rating methods, while TV viewing was measured according to the amount of viewing made during a week and the frequency with which violent programs were watched. Data was also gathered concerning children's aggressive and fear fantasies. Analysis revealed a positive correlation between TV viewing and peer-nominated aggression. Positive correlations between the amount of viewing and fear and aggressive fantasies.
