What is right with rural sociology
Article Abstract:
Sociology has been subjected to critical attack by other academic disciplines. The criticisms have set off a debate regarding the importance if not the relevance of the field, particularly its sub-discipline, rural sociology. It can be strongly argued that the field has greater importance more than ever in view of the rapid economic changes that have impacted greatly on society and have created social problems such as inequality, environmental degradation and increasing crime. Rural sociologists must continue to study social processes and how these affect human behavior.

Of maps and imaginations: sociology confronts the Genome
Article Abstract:
The Human Genome Project has major implications for sociology and social philosophy. This project is a scientific attempt to completely map out human genes and has generated moral, philosophic and popular controversy. However, analysis of the projects' implications from a sociological-feminist perspective reveals that the study of human genetics is itself embedded in a patriarchial view of society that assigns worth to individuals. In this manner, human genetics promotes the loss of humanity's essentially social basis.

1998 PSA Presidential Address: the value of sociology
Article Abstract:
Sociology as a scholarly, intellectual discipline is evaluated in terms of the value it generates for the community. The evaluation is made amidst an era of change and unease that has threatened the existence of the discipline within academic institutions. It is argued that sociology has four distinctive foci that together provide a framework in which to view the world and society. This distinctive frame of reference makes sociology a value-added enterprise.
