Professor Jesse Beery of Pleasant Hill, Ohio published Prof. Beery's Illustrated Course in Horse Training, a popular correspondence course that sold more than 300,000 copies around the world. Berry did not advocate cruel or unnecessarily harsh treatment of horses, but he was clearly a pragmatist and his work influenced many horsemen of the twentieth century.

Denton Offutt: Out of the shadows

Article Abstract:

Denton Offutt was considered to be America's most famous horse trainer in the mid-19th century, but today, he is just a shadow player in the lives of two more historical figures, John Rarey and Abraham Lincoln. He is more often remembered for an earlier period in his life when he gave 22-year-old Abraham Lincoln his start in business.
