A looming threat to livestock: Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is no hallucination
Article Abstract:
Lumpy Skin Disease (LSD) is a deadly acute capripox virus infection that affects cattle and results in the drop in milk production, stunted growth and severely scarred hides. LSD has affected sub-Saharan Africa and the Middle East and is now threatening North Africa, the Mediterranean and Asia. The most devastating economic losses causedby LSD are in the hides whose export sales could decreased to one-third after an LSD epidemic. Unfortunately, in countries like sub-Saharan Africa, few laboratories can manufacture the necessary vaccines unless world animal health authorities teach these countries how to produce them.
