Article Abstract:

Proper utilization and management of the spinnaker during heavy wind conditions could help a crew outrun most of its competitors in a competition. Knowing when and how to depower a boat through the spinnaker entails the management of the spinnaker pole in its vertical position and its angle with respect to the forestay.

An asymmetrical spinnaker sail is a new type of sail which offers challenging opportunities for sailors facing a downwind. The shape and construction of the sail is discussed. Gibing and takedown of the asymmetrical spinnaker are both described.
