An 11-day backpacking trip in Alaska's Tordrillos mountains involved numerous river crossings, bear sightings and inclement weather. This area of Alaska is bypassed by most backpackers because of its close proximity to Anchorage, and thus provides solitude. Related information on river crossings is included.

Article Abstract:

A man recounts a backpacking trip he took in April in the Chiricahua Range in Arizona. The region is only 20 miles away from Mexico and is one of the best examples of a sky island. He encountered beautiful vistas, ancient plants and Apache fox squirrels.
