Some people believe that the New York City Marathon is the largest, most prestigious and most exciting of all the marathons. Some 31,400 runners participated in the 1997 race. The men's winner was John Kagwe of Kenya; the women's winner was Franziska Rochat-Moser of Switzerland.

Olympic Marathon Trials

The Olympic Marathon Trials for 1996 will be held on Feb 10 in Columbia, SC, for the women and on Feb 17 in Charlotte, NC, for the men. The favorite in the women's competition will be Anne Marie Lauck, while Bob Kempainen will be the favorite in the men's competition.

Marathoners Steve Spence and Bill Reifsnyder have been rivals since they first first ran against each other in the 1980 High School Invitational in Shippensburg, PA. In each race in which they have both run they have brought out the best in each other.
