Article Abstract:

Runners can often maintain, or even improve, their times well into their 50s and 60s, but a 50-year-old body does not recover as rapidly as a 25-year-old body and it may be necessary to adjust training schedules. Allowing more days off, and other training tips for the older runner are discussed.

Even the most committed runners sometimes have motivational problems during the cold, dark winter months. Tips on how to stay active include warming up indoors, cross training at a gym, joining a noontime exercise group, eating a snack shortly before exercising and using music to energize.

Article Abstract:

Experienced runners can encourage new runners by beginning at an easy pace to prevent soreness and keep the activity fun. A brisk walk is a good way to begin. Novice runners can continue walking breaks during marathon training.
