Nutrition, exercise, and bone status in youth

Article Abstract:

The impact a child's exercise and diet have on maintaining adequate bone mass in later life cannot be conclusively determined, but studies indicate it would be imprudent to disregard the importance of exercise and calcium intake. The prepubescent years are critical to bone formation. Children should exercise in ways that use all skeletal muscle systems. Low fat dairy foods and calcium supplements when necessary are recommended. Children should be educated to understand the lifelong benefits of proper exercise and diet.

Nutrition, physical activity, and bone health in women

Article Abstract:

Bone mineral needs of women can be positively affected by nutrition and physical exercise. Research shows that nutrients such as vitamin D and calcium lower bone loss rates in both premenopausal and postmenopausal subjects, while high-load exercise generates bone mineral enhancement through stimulus. Exercise also reduces fracture risk by improving strength and balance.

Fasting and energy intake influence bone turnover in lightweight male rowers

Article Abstract:

Bone turnover, or the process of formation and resorption, is impacted by fasting prior to physical exercise. In studies of lightweight male rowers, 24 hours of acute fasting to achieve racing weight limits resulted in reduced bone turnover compared to rowers who did not fast. This finding indicates that energy intake is an important factor in assisting bone turnover.
