An all-chain primary rode is more stable than a nylon rode. Nylon is preferred for the secondary anchor, which is used when anchoring into a swell or a tidal current. Types of anchors, calculating where to drop the primary anchor, equipment needs, and other seamanship issues are analyzed.

Safety at sea became an important issue in 1979 when a combination of inexperienced sailors and unstable boats led to 15 deaths as a gale hit the Fastnet Race. Design stability is the most important factor in sailboat safety. Updated weather information is also vital.
