Self-steering for high-performance hulls: Today's bigger, faster boats pose new challenges for windvanes
Article Abstract:
Larger cruising boats do not carry windvanes, only 20 percent of the boats in the 2001 Atlantic Rally for cruisers (ARC) had a windvane mounted for the rally. The two factors that contributed to this shift are the improved reliability of electric autopilots and the steadily increasing size and speed of ordinary cruising boats.
