There is an increasing interest in acupuncture treatment for animals, although it is still used infrequently in the West, and then often as a last resort. Indications are that the treatment may be especially helpful for arthritis, skin conditions, and disk and dysplasia problems.

Cats and dogs often suffer from red, itchy skin but veterinary detection techniques may be able to determine the causes, which may range from yeast to allergies. Cortisone remains the most effective treatment, but some veterinarians hesitate to use it because of the side effects.
