The best position for upwind sailing is near the middle of the racing fleet if the favored side is not apparent. Racers should stay on the windward hip of opponents working towards the layline and leeward and forward of those headed towards the middle.

Angling for a fast finish

Article Abstract:

Sailboat racers should establish a plan for reaching the finish line ahead of other competitors particularly for handicap races. Racers must try to reach for the upwind or favored end of the line to gain finishing advantage.
