The effect of a preexercise meal on time to fatigue during prolonged cycling exercise

Article Abstract:

A study has found that subjects who ingested a preexercise carbohydrate (CHO)-containing meal had increased time-to-fatigue with no negative effects when they exercised to exhaustion on a bicycle ergometer at a 70% maximal oxygen uptake workload. The study had seven subjects exercising on one occasion after a breakfast with 100 g CHO 3 hours earlier and on another after fasting overnight. Exercise-time-to-fatigue was significantly longer after the breakfast.

Measurement of maximal oxygen uptake from two different laboratory protocols in runners and squash players

Article Abstract:

This article assesses whether different test methods to measure oxygen uptake are preferable for different athletic groups. Results show that half the subjects displayed the plateau phenomenon whichever test protocol was used, suggesting other protocols may need to be developed.
