Motorcycles with kickstarters generate a different kind of excitement. Kickstarting a motorcycle provides real satisfaction to drivers because they feel the piston through the arch of their boots as it hits compression. Kickstarters, however, have become rare in modern motorcycles.

Some cyclists claim that loud motorcycles are safer because they warn motorists when a cycle is near. However, car drivers and pedestrians are often annoyed by motorcycles that are too loud. An account of an attempt to modify the stock mufflers of a Ducati 900SS is given.
