Torrence is considered the world's foremost woman sprinter but she is not yet ready to call herself the world's fastest woman. She has matured in her skill as a sprinter and has a fuller understanding of what competition means to athletes like herself and her close rival Merlene Ottey of Jamaica.

Lewis, 35, will compete in the 100 meters, the 4 X 100 relay, and the long jump in the 1996 summer Olympics, his last Olympics. Although Lewis has won 8 Olympic Gold Medals and 8 World Championships gold medals, few people besides Lewis himself believe he can win the 100-meter in the Olympics.

Dan O'Brien believes that he is his own greatest opponent, in that the decathlon represents a competition against oneself. O'Brien is training for the 1996 Olympics, after failing to qualify for the 1992 Olympics. Although he will be 30 in 1996, O'Brien believes he is stronger and faster.
