Venus, Serena, and the women's tennis association: When and where "race" enters

Article Abstract:

Raymond Williams' concept of 'structures of feeling' is used to analyze the way racism shapes the feelings, beliefs, and practices of Whites as evident in dominant fan, player, administrator, and media responses to tennis stars Venus and Serena Williams. The analysis surrounding the Williams sisters additionally demonstrates the limits of symbolic inclusion as these liberal white gestures frequently cover the discursive forces that sustain racial injury and inequality.
