DARS INTEROPERABILITY SEEN
Article Abstract:
Sirius Satellite Radio says it may attain interim compatibility by prewiring new vehicles for digital audio radio services (DARS) by early 2001 but that full-scale integration is several years away. The FCC has mandated eventual interoperability between services such as those provided by Sirius and rival XM Satellite. Both companies are rushing to deliver first-generation models; STMicroelectronics has finished developing two of the three receiver chipsets XM needs, and the third is due in Apr 2001. Sirius is having its chipsets built by Lucent Technologies and is not expected to have its 'first cut' chipset until March; the final version will be ready in the third quarter. Sirius plans to meet its mid-summer service introduction using a discrete Matsushita chipset and off-the-shelf components in early units. Prices are expected to be in the $300 range, but much will depend on automakers' subsidies
