XBOX MAY HAVE BUMPY RIDE
Article Abstract:
Microsoft is refusing to comment on a report by Merrill Lynch analysts Henry Blodget and Justin Baldauf stating that the software giant is unlikely to see profits from its upcoming Xbox video game console for several years. The product could generate up to $1 billion in operating income over the next five years if it succeeds in the marketplace, but operating margins are projected to be only 20 percent, while Microsoft's overall margins are 45 percent. Revenues of $3 billion and operating income of $600 million are projected for FY 2006; if the analysis proves correct, the Xbox will account for less than five percent of Microsoft's profits that year. Analysis of the competitive landscape leads Blodget and Baldauf to conclude that the Xbox will not become the top-seller but may be a strong second or third to Sony and/or Nintendo. Sony is the current leader with its PlayStation 2.
