Systems competence offsets Asian losses
Article Abstract:
Increasing cooperation between German marine equipment suppliers in the area of system-oriented shipbuilding has been able to counter much of the adverse effect of low business volume from the Asian market. The low demand for individual components from Asia is a direct result of the regional economic crisis. Cooperative interactions between the members of the industry, which contributed DM16 billion ($9.8 billion) to the German economy in 1997, are in such areas as bridge navigation, electronics and propulsion systems.

MET turbo-charger gives higher pressure ratio
Article Abstract:
The design of MET turbo-chargers must be improved over the next few years in order to keep pace with diesel engines which are higher in output rating. The aluminum alloy normally used for impellers will not be strong enough to withstand the pressure involved. Titanium and steel are possible alternatives. Test results of a high-pressure ratio steel impeller are given.
