Concern over wear rates
Article Abstract:
Shipowners are showing increasing concern over the cylinder wear rate of two-stroke engines. Two-strokes, which account for nearly 80% of merchant vessels commissioned in 1997, are the obvious choice by shipowners because of their simple design and direct drive features along with minimum operating and maintenance costs. However, the increasing cost of cylinder lubrication, which in two-stroke engines account for as much as 83% of maintenance cost, is making shipowners wonder over the long-term efficiency of such engines.

Stolt's investment surge
Article Abstract:
Stolt-Nielsen Inc. is embarking on a massive expansion program to design and build diesel-powered chemical parcel tankers. Each of the tankers will be equipped with four diesel generators and an electric motor for improved efficiency. A new type of propulsion system will also be used in the tankers to reduce the level of vibration, noise and exhaust emission and maximize cargo space.
