Costly company values: training ships demand a heavy cash commitment. So is it money well spent?

Most training ships that were built in the 1960's to the 1970's in the UK have disappeared because of unprofitability but some companies companies have remained loyal to the concept. Mitsui OSK Lines has bought a training ship as their investment in training as they expand their fleet.

Training ships are being used again to train cadets and simulators and video materials provide a bridge between the study of seamanship and putting it into practice. The disadvantage to working on a ship however is that it disrupts academic studies.

Training ships are expensive facilities for maritime academies to keep which has forced some of the schools to replace these with simulators. A training ship could cost around $8,000 a year per student to maintain.
