Bacteria convert syngas into ethanol
Article Abstract:
Researchers at Oklahoma State University are studying the use of anaerobic bacteria in converting synthesis gases CO, CO2 and H2 to ethanol, butanol and acetate. The scientists are using a novel Clostridia strain isolated from the agricultural lagoons in Oklahoma as the microbial catalyst. They have discovered that the yield of ethanol from carbon monoxide is 10 times higher than that of acetate and butanol. Ethanol production is also expected to increase with the introduction of H2 to the CO/CO2 feed.
