Flexibility is the way forward
Article Abstract:
Italian shipbuilders do not share the pessimism of their counterparts on the European continent and they remain confident that they can compete with rival yards in Asia. This optimistic mood is reflected in the large number of cruise ship and bulk carrier newbuildings currently on order in the country's different shipyards. Industry executives believe that it is their flexibility which has allowed them to adapt to changing market conditions.

Full orderbooks follow restructuring process
Article Abstract:
Massive debt restructuring efforts have allowed Poland's Szczecinska, Gdynia and Gdanska shipyards to survive the loss of orders brought about by the collapse of the former USSR. Today, the three yards are thriving and all boast of full orderbooks. Polish officials stress that the government is not providing the yards with subsidies and that their success has been due to their own competitiveness.

Brighter future ahead?
Article Abstract:
Brazilian, Chilean and Argentine shipyards are beginning to enjoy some measure of relief from the recessionary economic climate which has afflicted the South American continent in the past years. Reorganization efforts have helped shipyards in the three countries become more efficient but the dearth of orders from domestic and overseas customers remains their biggest challenge.
