Furniture making, MES style
Article Abstract:
Keller Manufacturing Co., a Corydon, IN-based furniture maker, uses the manufacturing execution system (MES) Time Critical Management from Effective Management Systems to manage its operations. The MES creates job orders for parts from the mills and track these components in the assembly process in real time. This kind of tracking is the foundation of scheduling flexibility. Aside from monitoring the production process, the MES also keeps track of the costs that goes into every part manufactured. The MES allows workers on the floor to alter the schedule of shop orders as they go through manufacturing without having to depend on another for directions.

Book printing starts with the right paper
Article Abstract:
R.R. Donnelley & Sons has installed a tracking system based on wireless radio and bar codes to reduce and manage its inventory of paper at its book printing division in Crawfordsville, IN. The tracking system, supplied by Intermec Technologies Corp., consists of a 902 MHz spread spectrum wireless data communication system, lift-truck-mounted computers, hand-held computers with scanning capability and long-range scanners. The computers track receipts, usage, movements and adjustments of paper rolls on which bar code license plates are pasted. The tracking system improved inventory management and freed up some of the capital tied with inventory.
