Hitchhiking organisms
Article Abstract:
The problem associated with the transportation of marine organisms in ships' ballast water has been drawing considerable attention in the shipping industry, as the number of tropical diseases arising from marine contamination continues to increase. In relation to this, the International Maritime Organization has decided to create the Marine Environment Protection Committee to be tasked with preventing the spread of pathogenic marine organisms. Several states, on the other hand, have announced plans to introduce unilateral mandatory ballast water management requirements.
