IMO tackles overloading
Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has recommended the implementation of a new code that will ensure safe loading and unloading of bulk carriers. The IMO made the recommendation after a series of sea accidents which led to the sinking of two bulk carriers. Under the proposed code, all ships which are required to perform stress calculations should have an approved system of computation on board. Ship masters will also be required to transmit details of the ship to shore while the vessel is approaching port.

Solas solutions
Article Abstract:
The International Maritime Organization (IMO), in an effort aimed at promoting safety aboard tanker vessels, has amended its existing safety of life a sea (Solas) regulations. The IMO has added paragraph 1.2.3 to Solas Regulation 59. The amendment, which covers all tankers with keel laying done after Jul 1, 1998, requires the existence of an alternative means of venting the cargo tanks or a pressure monitoring system. All vessels not covered by the implementation date must do so not later than Jul 2001.

Free-fall for bulkers
Article Abstract:
The International Confederation of Free Trade Unions has recommended that bulk carriers be retrofitted with free-fall lifeboats following a finding that open lifeboats launched from bulk carriers in inclement weather did not protect crew from the elements. The proposal has not received widespread approval as some shippers resist the idea of retrofitting. However, retrofitting would not cause problems because ships have enough room between the block and the stern.
