Increased emphasis on newbuilding

Article Abstract:

The Singapore Economic Development Board disclosed that the marine industry output in 1996 was expected to drop by 10.9% to $2.26 bil from $2.53 bil in 1995. The output and profits were not only contributed by ship repair, which is the yard's main activity, but also by conversions, shipbuilding and offshore work. Business in the yards for the past years, according to reports ending in February 1997, suffered a general decline, with the exception of STSE and Pan United. The yard is diverting to design and construct specialized vessels due to increased income in shipbuilding.
