Inexperienced OOW led Empress to rocks
Article Abstract:
Twenty-two-year-old Marino Cattiotti was assigned to watch the bridge of the Empress of the North cruise ship despite having just recently graduated from a maritime academy. The Empress of the North hit a chartered and illuminated Rocky Island which forced its 206 passengers to abandon ship in the dark. Cattiotti was tasked to man the ship after the assigned senior third mate fell ill.

Carbon dioxide can kill
Article Abstract:
Carbon dioxide can be used as a fire suppressant, but it can also be the cause of fire as was the incident in the Calypso cruise ship in May 2006. Details on the drenching of carbon dioxide in the engine room, and the efficiency as well as the risks associated with it are discussed. Alternative fire suppressants, like halon and Novec 1230 fluid, are presented.
