More options, less choice
Article Abstract:
The introduction of new models for marine engines had been a highlight of 1997, but this was ironic because the number of engine manufacturers continued to decline. The decrease has been attributed to several factors. These include consolidations within the marine engine industry and the large costs associated with developing engines that meet emission standards. Some of the more well-known mergers that took place include Caterpillar's acquisition of Perkins and GEC Alsthom's merger with Mirrlees Blackstone.

Propac improves propulsion efficiency
Article Abstract:
Wartsila NSD has introduced the PropacRudder, a rudder that the manufacturer claims can enhance propulsion efficiency by as much as 12%. PropacRudder features a 'torpedo' that is bolted to the rudder that it fitted behind the propeller boss. The displacement caused by the 'torpedo' attachment creates a 'wake gain' effect that allows a lower amount of power to result in the same degree of thrust. Another claim for the device is that is reduces propeller-induced noise by 30% to 40%.

MHI studies new spec for fuel oil
Article Abstract:
Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) has started a study aimed at developing new specifications for fuel oil quality. The year-long study will look at the effects of such substances as asphaltene, vanadium, sodium, sulphur, silicon and aluminum on fuel quality. MHI, as well as other engine manufacturers, has shown increasing interest on the contribution of poor fuel quality on such factors as engine corrosion, poor combustion and abrasive wear.
