Motor-vehicle safety in Europe and the USA: a public-health prespective
Article Abstract:
Public-health concern for motor vehicle accidents should be more in the US than in the UK, as fatality rates from motor vehicle crashes in the US is substantially greater than in the UK. The casualty rate from motor accidents in the UK is less than the death rates from malignant neoplasm, ischemic heart-disease and cerebrovascular disease respectively. The corresponding figures for the US are much higher than the UK. This reflects that incidents of single and multiple vehicle crashes are more in the US. Death rate per 100,000 persons from motor accidents is 6.8 in Norway and 29.3 in Latvia.

Daytime veiling glare and driver visual performance: influence of windshield rake angle and dashboard reflectance
Article Abstract:
The visual performance of drivers is adversely impacted by dashboard reflectance in direct sunlight and windshield rake angle. Research participants were less likely to identify low-contrast pedestrian dummy objects and required extra time to detect the objects. The combination of a high dashboard reflectance and a large rake angle produced the greatest impact. Reduced contrast affected older participants more than the younger ones. The larger the windshield rake angle, the greater the veiling glare.

Optimal strategies for adaptive curve lighting
Article Abstract:
The advantages and disadvantages of several curve-lighting strategies that involve moving one or both low beams by various amounts is evaluated. Results reveal that for short-radius, left and right curves, moving both lamps in parallel should substantially increase the visibility of objects in one's lane of travel, in several additional lanes of travel to the left and right, and off the road.
