Recent financial scandals, such as the BCCI affair, have pointed to accounting and auditing practices and the need for regulation. There is concern about the teaching of accountancy, critics say there is too much concentration on technique and not enough on analysis. Accountancy departments are traditionally under-resourced with heavy teaching loads, and are often sponsored by national audit companies or professional bodies.

Norway's fleet revives

The Storting's new tax laws that were implemented in June 1997 is causing a positive impact on the Norwegian shipping fleet. The new tax law, which is aimed at enhancing the industry's competitiveness, has improved the fleet's performance for the first time in five years. Under the new tax system, owners are exempted from tax for profits retained, investment, for instance.

Settling in Mount Desert
