Prospects for global coverage still distant
Article Abstract:
The aim of the marine industry for global electronic navigational chart coverage is still distant with the concern on the African coast where the coverage is not expected to be available in the near future. Challenges and inflexibility of the International Maritime Organization rule with regard to this issue are discussed.

Gathering chart data goes full circle

Two identical hydrographic survey ships operated by the Royal Netherlands Navy, HNLMS Snellius and HNLMS Luymes, have sonar systems that gather chart data and monitor obstructions and wrecks. Details on the ships hydrographic surveying and data collection for electronic nautical charts are discussed.

The features of an autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) are discussed. An AUV can conduct sonar scans of the seabed beneath ice in waters that may be too shallow for conventional naval submarines and can also make high-resolution maps.
