Protecting a valuable asset
Article Abstract:
Breaks in hull coating can result in significant damage since seawater will seep in and act as an electrolyte that removes electrons from one area and deposits them in another. Most shipowners agree that cathodic protection is the best approach to preventing hull deterioration. The two most common types of cathodic protection are the sacrificial anodes and impressed current system. Although sacrificial anodes are cheaper and easier to install, most shipyards believe that impressed current is a more cost-effective approach.

Check and detect
Article Abstract:
Engine monitoring is one of the most complex tasks associated undertaken aboard ships. Since a variety of devices and procedures have been developed to assess temperature, vibration, pressure, power consumption and resistance, the use of a standard monitoring scheme is no longer feasible. Generally, however, the degree through which monitoring must be undertaken is determined by required class notation.

Renewing the fleet
Article Abstract:
The Polish Shipowners Association (PSA) enjoins all ship owners to focus on upgrading their old fleets and investing on new fleets to stay competitive. The calling comes after reports that about 35 of its ships are to be withdrawn from operations due to ageing and technical difficulties. Lately, PSA discloses a gradual comeback by the industry as a result of a government's fleet support program.
