Range of fast freighter design grows

Ship designers around the world are coming out with new fast cargo carrier designs which can reach speeds up to 50 knots and vastly-improved ranges. FastShip Atlantic Inc.'s fast cargo-carrier project is aiming for a freighter which can make the round-trip transatlantic crossing in a mere eight days. Designers of Australia's Incat Cargo Express state that their vessel will have a top speed of 50 knots and a range of 500 nautical miles.

Feeder future looks bright
Article Abstract:
Shippers are pleased with the growth of containerized trade and its impact on feeders. Container shipments are expected to rise 6% in Europe and 15% in East Asia. The growth is expected to spur construction of larger feeder vessels and pressure port operators into improving capacity and service. Two shippers that have substantially grown their feeder operations are Shreyas Shipping of Bombay and Orient Express Lines of Dubai.

The Ship Hull Integrity Program is aimed at developing an artificial intelligence-based stress monitoring system for analyzing the structural stability of ship structures. The program, which is being funded by the European Commission, will evaluate the advantages and disadvantages of radar-based monitoring systems and data mining software which will be used in the system.
