Classification societies face a challenge to redefine their role to better meet the changing demands of their activities. They may also have to acquire new skills to adapt to more stringent regulations of ship design, construction and maintenance.

There has been no wage distinction for officer experience or vessel type of size due to a shortage of international shipping officers. The implications of this issue are discussed.
