Revised requirements drive davit design

Article Abstract:

The development of davits is being influenced by improved safety and other changes in rescue boats and lifeboats and growth in the fast ferry market. The International Maritime Organisation has made changes to the Safety of Life at Sea convention whereby lifeboats have to be stowed at a maximum of 15 metres above the water to facilitate embarkation, resulting in the development of new davits. The launch of new fast ferries has led to the construction of light aluminium davits.

Hand-arm vibration: product design principles

Article Abstract:

A string trimmer, designed to reduce the hand-arm vibration to acceptable levels, shows that proper design can increase productivity and reduce health problems. Application of various engineering principles to the design mechanically reduce the control of vibration at the source. Ergonomically modified transmission path from tool to hand has reduced fatigue, increased operator comfort, and provided better control of the tool.

Corrosion control begins at design stage

Article Abstract:

Corrosion control on modern ships, particularly tankers, should start at the design stage. Studies reveal that corrosion rates on modern tankers differ significantly depending on several factors such as oxygen accessibility on submerged areas and the type steel used. Consequently, ship designers should try to minimize areas exposed to corrosive factors, as well as limit the size of corrosion traps.
