Small bores show big potential
Article Abstract:
High-speed diesel engines are carving a niche in the shipping industry due to their favorable power density. These engines usually serve as emergency generator sets or auxiliary generators. For fast ferries, they are the main source of propulsion. High-speed engines offer several advantages over medium- and low-speed engines. For instance, they can be used in icebreaking duties and serve as power sources for offshore exploration in the summer. Some of the changes made in high-speed engines include the fitting of piston rings and the use of unit injectors with electronic control.

Output rise continues in low-speed market
Article Abstract:
Many marine diesel engine manufacturers are developing new low-speed engines that produce the same power output at lower fuel consumptions. MAN B og W Diesel A S has developed its new 12-cylinder K98MC-C engine that is capable of producing over 66,195kW. The new engine design features new vibration reduction systems and a no-camshaft configuration to ease repair operations. Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Ltd. and New Sulzer Ltd. also plan to introduce upgraded versions of their UEC7LSII and RTA96C diesel engines in late 1996.

Four-strokes give better emissions
Article Abstract:
European manufacturers of four-stroke ship diesel engines are intensifying their development efforts to come up with engine designs generating less NOx emissions and offering superior power, reliability and fuel-economy. Among the leading players in production of such medium-speed prime movers are France's SEMT-Pielstick, Finland's Wartsila Diesel Oy and Germany's MAN B and W Diesel GmbH and Krupp Mak Machinenbau GmbH.
