Technological development and occupational accidents as a conditional relationship: a study of over eighty years in the Swedish mining industry

Article Abstract:

Relationship between occupational accidents and technological development are considered as conditional, since changes in technology fail to explain clearly the variations in accident frequencies. The handicraft, mechanization and automation stages in the Swedish mining industry from 1911 to 1990 show that legislative changes for reporting of occupational accidents affected the accident rate. Mechanization, work intensification due to unemployment, and reduction of hours worked underground also increased the accident rate. More research on the subject will help to improve practical safety work.

Age-related accidents risks among assembly workers: a longitudinal study of male workers employed in the Swedish automobile industry

Article Abstract:

Young assemblers in the Swedish automobile industry are found to have high age-related accident ratios (AR), than older assemblers, who have a low AR. The study shows that older workers possess acquired compensatory ability, rather than a decline in their working ability. The low AR for older workers reveal that they are less exposed to risks, while the high AR for younger workers indicate that they are exposed to more risks and lack the experience to face a complex situation. Labor-market factors, early deselection from the occupation also contribute to age-related differences in ARs.

Influence of color on fire vehicle accidents

Article Abstract:

A study of fire vehicle accidents by the National Safety Council reveals that the chances of visibility-related accidents are greater in a red pumper than in a lime-yellow or white line pumper. Such accidents are expensive and dangerous to both vehicles involved in the accident. The use of audible warning devices and training civilians and fill service drivers will help reduce the severity of these accidents.
