The Italian job
Article Abstract:
Shiprepair firm Cascade General's afloat rudder repair of the Italian bulk cargo ship 'Capitano Giovanni' highlights the international marketing efforts of the firm. Aside from the 'Capitano Giovanni' repair contract, the firm has also repaired ships of German, Norwegian, Philippine and Swiss origin. For the Italian ship, Cascade's engineers acquired the ship's computer-aided design data on the rudder by means of electronic mail. All repairs were done afloat alongside the damaged ship while keeping it in cargo condition.

Scars are healing in Germany
Article Abstract:
The German shipbuilding industry is showing signs of recovery following the closure of Bremer Vulkan. The acquisition of MW by the Aker Group of Norway, along with A P Moller's purchase of Volkswerft, has brought reassurance of a minimum of job losses even with scheduled restructurings in 1998 and 1999. Former Vulkan subsidiaries have posted productivity improvements of as much as 40% in 1998 compared to the previous year as a consequence of streamlining and reorganization measures.
