The new Millenium cruise ship is able to sail for five days without any emission into the sea due to advanced membrane filtration and disinfecting treatments. Air emissions have also been reduced with the use of gas turbines and a "dry-cleaning" system for flue gases.

The combination of propulsion pods and gas turbines in the new Millennium cruise ship, have significant operational advantages, such as eliminating the need for a rudder. Issues concerning the improved safety and efficiency as a result of this design are presented.

Caterpillar Motoren and Scana are to build integrated propulsion systems for shipbuilders and ship owners. The range will include M20, M25, M32 and M43 engines capable of 1,140kW (1,528bhp) to 8,100kW (10,858bhp) power.
